While crime in Orlando and Orange County has generally held steady or has decreased this year, homicides in the county have increased substantially. Officials quoted in a recent Orlando Sentinel report indicate that murders are up 72% this year compared to the first four months of 2015. In response, a violent-crime task force has been formed. Local law enforcement officials and community members have partnered to consider responses to the disturbing developments regarding violent crime.
This task force is exactly the type of response needed for confronting crime. Law enforcement officials cannot be the only parties responsible for combating the violence in our communities. However, unless massive resources and political might are also contributed, the challenges may continue to fester. Long term solutions that confront addiction, poverty and inequality are necessary. Community involvement is crucial. Law enforcement involvement is crucial. But political and economic commitment are also crucial.
